Rug Size Guide
Finding the right proportions for a beautifully considered room.
A thoughtfully chosen rug does more than soften a space. It brings furniture together, defines the room and introduces texture, warmth and balance.
Whether you're furnishing a Parisian-inspired living room, creating a welcoming dining space or completing a restful bedroom, the right rug size makes all the difference. Our guide will help you find a size that complements your furniture and feels beautifully proportioned to your home.
Understanding Rug Sizes
Small Rugs — 120 × 160 cm and 120 × 170 cm
Ideal for compact spaces, reading corners and smaller areas beside the bed. These sizes introduce softness and texture without requiring a substantial amount of floor space.
Medium Rugs — 160 × 230 cm
A versatile choice for living rooms, bedrooms and carefully arranged seating areas. This size can help anchor a sofa and coffee table or introduce a welcoming layer beneath the lower portion of a bed.
Large Rugs — 200 × 290 cm and 200 × 300 cm
Designed for more generous spaces, larger rugs can bring an entire seating arrangement together. They also work beautifully in bedrooms where you want a wider expanse of softness surrounding the bed.
Size availability varies by rug design.
Living Room
Creating a Beautifully Balanced Seating Area
A rug should complement the arrangement of your furniture, bringing the individual pieces together into one considered space. For a cohesive appearance, we recommend choosing a rug large enough for at least the front legs of your sofa and armchairs to rest upon it.
A 160 × 230 cm rug can work beautifully in a compact or medium-sized living room, depending on the furniture arrangement. For larger seating areas, consider a 200 × 290 cm or 200 × 300 cm rug. The additional surface area helps establish a sense of continuity between sofas, armchairs and coffee tables.

The Maison Note: Where space permits, a slightly larger rug often creates a more harmonious result than one that sits entirely between the furniture.
Dining Room
Bringing Elegance to the Dining Table
The right dining room rug creates a natural foundation for your table and chairs. When choosing a size, consider the full dining arrangement—not simply the dimensions of the table. Ideally, allow approximately 60–70 cm of rug beyond each edge of the dining table. This gives chairs room to move while remaining on the rug.
For example, a table measuring 80 × 150 cm could pair well with a 200 × 290 cm rug, providing approximately 60 cm of additional width on either side and 70 cm at each end. Always measure your particular dining arrangement before deciding.

The Maison Note: Flatwoven or lower-pile rugs are particularly practical beneath dining tables, allowing chairs to move more easily.
Bedroom
A Softer Start to Every Morning
A bedroom rug introduces comfort, warmth and a sense of calm. One elegant approach is to position the rug horizontally beneath the lower portion of the bed, allowing it to extend beyond the sides and foot.
A 160 × 230 cm rug can create this effect with a smaller bed, while a 200 × 290 cm or 200 × 300 cm rug offers more generous coverage. Alternatively, smaller rugs can be positioned beside the bed to provide softness underfoot without extending beneath the furniture.

The Maison Note: Consider how much rug will remain visible once the bed is positioned. The exposed border helps establish the room's proportions.
Before You Choose
Three Simple Steps
1. Measure your furniture
Record the dimensions of your sofa arrangement, dining table or bed.
2. Consider the surrounding space
Allow enough room for doors, walkways and the natural movement of furniture.
3. Visualise the rug
Use removable masking tape to mark your preferred rug dimensions on the floor. This simple step will help you understand how the rug fits within the room before purchasing.
